The City of Brampton is currently hiring an experienced Data Engineer! If you have strong experience in Data methodologies and technologies such as engineering, architecting, designing, building, implementing, and supporting Master Data Management, Data Quality, BI & Analytics, Data Warehouse, and Data and Application Integration and want to work in an innovative and fast paced environment, this is your opportunity.
AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Reporting to the Team Lead, Solns Integration, responsible for engineering, architecting, designing, building, implementing and supporting analytical / BI, Master Data Management, Data Warehouse, and Integration solutions for City’s needs and corporate strategic direction, including complex dashboards, reports and BI portals from data warehouse and other data sources, data warehousing, master data management and data quality solutions. This role is also responsible for designing and building application and data integration solutions to enable master data management, data sharing, decision making and analytics, linking technology and business operations.
OPERATION SUPPORT
- Business Intelligence
- In collaboration with the BI&I program manager and other program managers, as required, project manager, business analyst and business SMEs, define business requirements and needs related to business intelligence solutions.
- Develops technical specifications related to business user needs; define visualization options, security, data models, data warehouse and integration specifications.
- Provides technical expertise to planning and prioritization for IT investments including research, analysis and reporting.
- Design and architect end-to-end analytical solutions.
- Build prototypes and proof of concept for business.
- Implement and support dashboards, analytical solutions and business intelligence portals.
- Perform user-testing acceptance.
- Research business Intelligence industry trends and follow best practices.
- Master Data Management
- In collaboration with the BI&I program manager and other program managers, as required, project manager, business analyst and business SMEs, define business requirements and needs related to Master Data Management, Data Quality solutions.
- Define quality, standardization, cleansing, merge and matching rules.
- Design and architect end-to-end Master Data solutions.
- Design and implement golden record, instance and reference data models, quality and master data plans and design process for managing master data throughout the lifecycle.
- Define data integration needs and requirements.
- Research Master Data Management and Data Quality industry trends and follow best practices.
- Information Integration
- In collaboration with the BI&I program manager and other program managers, as required, project manager, business analyst and business SMEs, define business requirements and needs related to data, process and application integration required to support business intelligence, master data, data warehouse and data sharing solutions.
- Develops technical specifications related to business user needs; define integration options such as real time vs. batch, security, data transformation, data access.
- Design, build and implement data integration process flows to support BI, Master Data Management, Data Quality, Data warehouse and Data sharing.
- Create event listeners, manage adapters, orchestrate services, monitor jobs, map data.
- Support and monitors the ETL and Real time integration processes.
- Optimize data and information usage.
- Research Integration industry trends and follow best practices.
- Information Management
- In collaboration with the BI&I program manager and other program managers, as required, project manager, business analyst and business SMEs, define business requirements and needs related to information management.
- Perform data profiling, data mining and knowledge discovery.
- Design and build knowledge domains, data models and schemas for data warehouse and data marts.
- Perform Data modelling with several techniques such as normalization, start schemas, slowly changing dimensions, de-normalized; utilizing data modelling tools to record, update, reverse engineer and generate DDL; creating logical and physical data models for current and proposed states; turning application designs into data model specifications. Transactional and dimensional models. Ability to perform database reverse engineer.
- Create and maintain the Enterprise Data Model at the Conceptual, Logical and Physical Level
- Steward of Enterprise Metadata Architecture & Standards
- Evaluate new data sources for adherence to the organization's quality standards and ease of integration.
- Keep abreast of technology and innovation in all relevant areas.
- Ability to gather complex and/or ambiguous qualitative and quantitative data, structured and unstructured data, to analyse and verify accuracy and quality of the data and to make expert and technical decisions.
STAFF GUIDANCE AND DIRECTION
- Support staff, prioritize and organize daily work direction to meet operational effectiveness.
- Coach, mentor and provide guidance as required to meet operational effectiveness.
- Participate in recruitment and hiring process as required to meet operational effectiveness.
- Provide input into performance review as required.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
- Act as an advisory subject matter expert to meet corporate service standards. Escalate complex issues to appropriate level.
- Liaise with stakeholders in order to understand business needs and recommend solutions to meet operational effectiveness.
- Build and maintain a relationship with internal and external stakeholders, departments and team members to achieve common goals and objectives.
COMMUNICATION AND REPORTING
- Present and convey complex concepts and conditions to stakeholders; develop reports, proposals and make recommendations to management for effective decision-making.
- Keep management informed of activities and initiatives; recommend solutions for effective decision-making.
CORPORATE CONTRIBUTION
- Conduct research, review, assess, trends, current processes and practices to recommend solutions that improve business processes, service solutions and best practices.
- Maintain knowledge of collective agreements, City policies and practices, legislation, regulations and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

- Use of effective resource and expense management at all times to meet corporate policies and guidelines.

SELECTION CRITERIA:
This job has transitioned from non-union. Upon evaluation through the new job evaluation modernization initiative, minimum qualifications will be updated to be representative of the new CUPE criteria.
EDUCATION:
- Post-secondary degree in Computer Science, Information Services, Systems Engineering, Business Planning or equivalent in related field.
EXPERIENCE:
- 5-7 years’ experience in business intelligence, data analysis, data modelling, data integration, master data.
- Experience in both public and/or unionized environment is an asset.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in database design and development.
- 3-5 years supervisory experience is an asset; Ability to guide and motivate staff.
OTHER SKILLS AND ASSETS:
- Practical knowledge of Municipal, Regional, Provincial and Federal Governments and applicable Legislations is an asset
- Expertise in a range of tools and methodologies for business intelligence, data management, data warehousing, data marts and data mining such as Informatica IDMC, Atacama, Microsoft Fabric including Power BI, Azure Data Factory, etc.
- Knowledge of database design principles such as normalization, data aggregation, data standardization, and relational, canonical and dimensional data modelling.
- Experience in Project Management, with an emphasis on communicating through written business cases and solutions recommendations;
- Experience in planning, forecasting, scheduling and reporting;
- Hands-on experience with business requirements gathering and analysis;
- Proven experience in IT solutions design and development;
- Excellent technical architecture, infrastructure; security and technical support documentation skills;
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
- Strong Presentation skills. Ability to present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language;
- Ability to conduct research into emerging technologies and trends, standards, and products as required;
- Highly self-motivated and directed;
- Extensive experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment;
- Experience and ability to develop Data and Business Architecture, Service Oriented Architecture, business process automation, integration, etc.
- Experience in use of technology and desktop productivity tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Outlook, internet...etc.);
