SALARY RANGE:           1ST STEP:     $66,466.40 per annum

                                        2ND STEP:     $69,979.00 per annum

                                       JOB RATE:     $73,619.00 per annum

AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Reports to the Principal Planner/Supervisor, the Planning Technician is responsible for providing front-line technical support to the Division, including responding to Planning-related inquiries, conducting research and fieldwork, attending and organizing meetings and public planning events, and other divisional support to support departmental studies and projects and within the Division. Also responsible for processing applications including Consent, Minor Variance, routine Site Plan, Part lot Control and/or heritage applications.

 

  • Provides front line technical response; reviews and responds to planning-related inquiries and seeks additional information as needed. referring inquiries as appropriate
  • Provides background information/documents and advises on application processes as needed
  • Receive, log and track consent, minor variance, routine site plan, part-lot control and heritage applications for consideration by Committee of Adjustment and/or Heritage Committee as appropriate.
  • Review application submissions and request additional information from applicant if incomplete
  • Circulate applications to relevant departments and agencies for feedback
  • Assemble, clarify, and analyse comments based on professional planning principles, provincial/regional guidelines, and City Plans/policies/objectives; reconcile conflicting comments
  • Conduct research and site visits as needed to clarify and process application
  • Prepare reports with recommendations and supporting material for consideration by appropriate internal team(s) and Committee(s)
  • Attend and present at Committee of Adjustment and internal meetings
  • Attend Local Planning Appeal Tribunal as a professional witness
  • Update and consolidate Official and Secondary Plans, Zoning and other by-laws, conditions of draft plan approval, incorporating amendments as approved; liaise with GIS on updates where required
  • Maintain statistical databases
  • Update development files and records; track applications in progress
  • Perform site visits and field work for potential or pending Heritage properties and/or applications to Committee of Adjustment or other planning related applications
  • Conducts archival and file research
  • Participates on Planning projects, studies and team in support of Departmental initiatives, including Term of Council Priorities
  • Provides administrative support within the Division including conducting research, drafting reports, preparing meeting materials, preparing web content

 

SELECTION CRITERIA:

 

 

EDUCATION:

  • High school (Grade 12) graduation plus an additional program of three to four years in Urban or Regional Planning, or equivalent.

 

REQUIRED LICENCE CERTIFICATION:

  • Non-probationary valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence an asset

 

EXPERIENCE:

  • Up to two months experience is required. 

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ASSETS:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and additional related software.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer service.
  • Exceptional organization, research and time/project management skills
  • Maintains current on provincial/regional planning policies, guidelines, trends and best practices
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
