AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Reporting to the Expeditor, this position is responsible for supporting Economic Development by providing expertise in economic development and land-use planning. The primary function is to support clients and sector managers through the development approval process, ensuring alignment with municipal, regional, and provincial requirements. The role involves preparing and presenting information on policy frameworks and financial incentives, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, monitoring legislative and policy changes, and offering strategic input on planning and economic development projects. Additionally, the position represents Economic Development in meetings, events, and consultations, advocating for investment priorities and fostering collaboration across departments. 

  • Prepare presentations and materials on the current policy framework, approval processes, and financial incentives.
  • Review development applications (e.g., OPA, ZBA, Subdivision) and provide feedback on various policy studies, including market studies, planning justification reports, and economic development studies.
  • Support Economic Development sector managers during site/business visits by researching site history, including land-use planning, zoning, development approvals, and by-law infractions, and be prepared to address questions from executives and engage with surrounding businesses.
  • Liaise with City departments, agencies, and the public on planning proposals and matters, including engaging with senior-level contacts.
  • Informally engage with internal and external stakeholders to test ideas and scenarios for business expansion and/or relocation.
  • Lead/attend internal and external meetings, including cross-functional and technical working groups, representing Economic Development.
  • Support sector managers and their clients through the development review process, from application submission to full occupancy.
  • Set milestones and track progress of applications through all stages of the development process.
  • Attend Development Team, Pre-Consultation, and Site Plan meetings on behalf of Economic Development, reporting back on items requiring input or escalation.
  • Stay up-to-date on land-use planning knowledge, municipal, regional, and provincial development requirements, and updated legislation through seminars, courses, and industry publications.
  • Monitor changes in local, provincial, and federal legislation and policies with economic and development implications.
  • Stay informed on best practices and trends for planning, urban design, and economic development indicators.
  • Set the context for project priority levels relative to other investments.
  • Provide economic development input on City of Brampton capital projects.
  • Attend public meetings, open houses, grand openings, committee meetings, and other events as required.
  • Review Council and Committee agendas to identify items of interest to Economic Development.
  • Provide support to the Expeditor and sector managers on client files and inquiries.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

 

EDUCATION:

  • High School (Grade 12) graduation plus an additional program of three to four years or equivalent in Urban and Regional Planning or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Over 4 years, up to and including 8 years

REQUIRED LICENCE CERTIFICATION:

  • Membership with the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) with a Registered Planner (RPP) designation with the Ontario Profession Planners Institute (OPPI)
  • Valid G driver’s licence

OTHER SKILLS AND ASSETS:

  • Understanding of council processes, committee operations, and municipal decision-making structures.
  • Ability to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze and visualize spatial data related to land-use planning and development.
  • Familiarity with urban design principles and how they contribute to creating vibrant and sustainable communities.
  • Understanding of environmental planning, green building standards, and sustainability initiatives relevant to development projects.
  • Insight into the creation and implementation of public policies related to economic development and planning.
  • Experience analyzing economic and demographic data to support decision-making and policy recommendations.
  • Familiarity with financial modeling, cost-benefit analysis, or evaluating the economic impact of proposed developments.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders, including developers, business leaders, and community groups.
  • Demonstrated good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good organization and time management skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer service.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
