SALARY GRADE:  5

HIRING SALARY RANGE:  $86,091.00 - $96,853.00 per annum

MAXIMUM OF SALARY RANGE:  $107,614.00 per annum

AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Reporting to the Senior Supervisor, Training & Safety, this position is accountable for developing and delivering all training programs for the City’s Transit Mechanics/maintenance staff, relating to regulatory compliance, training, inspection, investigation and analysis to promote public safety and reliability within the Transit system.

 

  1. Technical training. Develop and revise as necessary all safety-training programs for new and existing Brampton Maintenance staff. Ensure that training programs and the modules meet government and City standards and result in the successful certification of employees for the safety of public and staff.    Maintain a current knowledge of training requirements and keeps abreast of technology as it relates to Transit mechanical safety. Develop training evaluation standards to ensure consistency in delivery. 
  2. Compliance and Documentation. Identify training needs and proactively develop training programs to minimize exposure. Maintain training records and manuals to keep abreast of cycled training requirements. Develop Standard Operating Procedures for all equipment and incorporate training for all listed apparatus.  Ensure records related to certificates, licensing and legislative requirements are kept up-to-date and accessible and provide statistics as required. Commission and approve new equipment and tools. Prepare highly technical training and assessment reports in a logical, comprehensive manner.
  3. Using a full range of delivery methods, train maintenance staff in a wide variety of corporate skill development programs including technical and soft skills.  Develop lesson plans and training materials, as well as preparing exams and practical instruction pertaining to diagnosis, troubleshooting, repair, maintenance and operation of the transit fleet.   Provide counselling and guidance to all staff regarding training initiatives and provides on-the-job safe operation advice.  Select teaching and training aids using visual aids and references. 
  4. Health and Safety. Actively participate in Health and Safety initiatives such as the Joint Health and Safety Committee and ensure that all training is integrated with adequate safety measures.  Utilize investigative techniques to determine potential safety hazards.  Collect safety-related facts and determine corrective action through training improvements.  Provide recommendations based on investigations.  Ensure all in-house training equipment is operational and meets safety standards.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA:

 

EDUCATION:

  • Grade 12 education or equivalent secondary school education as established by the Ontario Ministry of Education

 

EXPERIENCE:

  • 2 years experience in training and technical facilitation
  • 5 years experience in a unionized fleet maintenance setting in the transit industry with specific knowledge of transit related vehicle maintenance and repair, manufacturer specifications and schematics

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ASSETS:

  • Knowledge of education principles, technical writing and instructional design
  • Excellent presentation, interpersonal, organizational, written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
  • Must be able to provide ‘work shift flexibility’ to meet training needs for the continuous shift operation
  • A “CZ” driving licence and have a clean driving record
  • Have attained, Motor Vehicle Mechanic’s certificate Truck and Coach Technician 310T
