JOB TITLE: Assistant, Forestry Planning – Co-Op

DEPARTMENT:  Community Services

NUMBER OF POSITIONS:  1

JOB STATUS & DURATION:  Temporary 4-months

HOURS OF WORK:  40 hour workweek / variable hours

LOCATION:  Williams Parkway Operations Centre

HOURLY RATE:  $19.37 per hour

POSTING DATE:  February 15, 2025

CLOSING DATE:  February 27, 2025

 

AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:

 

Reporting to the Supervisor, Forestry Planning, assist Forestry Planning and Parks Community Programs teams with gathering of data, research, analysis, and organization of resources related to urban forestry and the natural environment. Additional opportunity to assist with Parks Community Programs delivery of community events and programming.

    • Assist Supervisor of Forestry with the implementation of the City’s Urban Forestry Management Plan and the Brampton One Million Trees Program, including research and the preparation of background materials for reports
    • Review and analyze the City’s Tree and Natural Areas inventory, including green infrastructure assets
    • Assist with on-going major projects by conducting background research, present findings and attending meetings
    • Research, review, and update policies and guidelines for tree related policies and guidelines
    • Assist Forestry Supervisor with the review of permit reviews and tree protection reports
    • Assist Forestry Supervisor in preparing responses to community service requests and inquiries
    • Assist Forestry Supervisor by digitizing data and by liaising with GIS staff to prepare digital mapping resources
    • Conducting site visits with staff
    • Perform other duties as may be assigned

 

SELECTION CRITERIA:

 

           EDUCATION: 

    • Student must be enrolled in any University Co-op Program with a focus on forestry, natural resource management, environmental sustainability and natural heritage planning interests. Proof of enrollment letter will be requested prior to job offer.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

    • Knowledge and experience with urban forestry best practices; including but not limited to; mapping and inventory, tree protection, tree planting, invasive species management, woodlot management.
    • Knowledge and experience with MS Word, Excel, Adobe, PowerPoint, and GIS mapping software.

OTHER SKILLS AND ASSETS:

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Fast learner, capable to work in a rapidly changing environment with deadlines.
    • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
    • Ability to work remotely online with personal equipment as needed, including use of Microsoft Teams/ Skype for Business for video conferencing (additional resources may be available).

**Preference will be given to students that have a permanent residency in Brampton.

 

**Various tests and/or exams may be administered as part of the selection criteria.
