AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Reporting to the Foreperson, Construction, assists the Supervisor in completion of landscaping projects. This position directs work crews.
• Install and repair of paving, timber structures, benches, bleachers, playground equipment, fencing and drainage structures.
• Submit schedule of manpower and equipment to complete projects for approval by Supervisor; would also include estimating material costs and delivery schedules.
• Inspects/supervises work performed by members of crew on a project; ensures quantity, quality of work and safe/efficient use of equipment, tools, and materials.
• Operates equipment/tools/i.e. backhoe, large trucks.
• Make arrangements for marking of underground utilities, Gas, Bell, Hydro, Cable, Water, fibre optics or traffic signals. Meet on site with locater or have them mark and fax information.
• Communicate with the public in a courteous and efficient manner regarding inquires, complaints and emergencies. Investigate complaints and determine a resolution.
• Co-ordinate manpower, equipment and materials for the completion of projects with other supervisors and foremen in the Parks Division, assist them in emergency situations and co-ordinate with contractors working on this job site.
• Trains staff to perform work safely and efficiently.
• Assists supervisor in administrating the section by recording of time, costing of projects and purchase of materials. This may involve computer input and data retrieval necessary for completion of projects.
• Site meetings with Landscape architects for pre-construction and to discuss final acceptance of project. Determine deficiencies and repairs needed.
• Provide assistance in snow removal; snow ploughing, Parkskeeper 1-4 duties, pruning, removal & wood clean up, wood lot maintenance, stump removal.
• Storm Centre Management, coordinating staff/equipment to respond to any weather event on an as and when required basis.
• Co-ordinate and purchase parts and supplies for the construction area projects. Blanket purchase orders and credit cards are used for this purpose.
• Provide special events support services on a city wide basis, as required.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
EDUCATION:
• High school (Grade 12) graduation plus an additional program of over one year and up to two years in a landscape technician program or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE:
• Over two (2) years up to, and including four (4) years in landscaping or horticulture.
OTHER SKILLS AND ASSETS:
• A valid, non-probationary Ontario Class AZ or ARZ driver’s licence.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer service.
• Able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
**Preference will be given to students that have a permanent residency in Brampton.
