AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:

 

Under the direction of the Animal Services Supervisor / Supervisor on Duty, Veterinary Technician, ensures the care of all animals under the control of the Animal Shelter through administration of food, maintenance of kennel facilities, monitoring of the welfare and behaviour of these animals. Administer medication and treatments to these animals as directed by Technical staff and ensure all exercise programs are completed. Maintain records as required.

 

    • Ensure the kennel facilities are sterile and disinfected; empty and refill litter boxes. Clean grooming, kitchen, storage and other shelter areas;
    • Performs daily monitoring of all assigned animals and administers minor treatments (including to animals under the as directed by the Technical staff. Maintain associated records;
    • Feed animals, clean food bowls, refill water dishes, prepare food (including special diets) and hand feed if necessary;
    • Bathe animals when required;
    • Monitor animal health and behaviour, place in isolation if required;
    • Administer daily medical treatments to animals as directed by the Veterinary Technician;
    • Work with quarantined animals;
    • Understand, apply and adhere to Corporate Policies & Procedures, Health and Safety Standards, and Emergency Procedures for all participants and staff;
    • Check animal health and ensure that animals are vaccinated and de-wormed prior to adoption, under the direction of the Supervisor;
    • Provide exceptional and compassionate one on one customer service with the public in person, or by phone, to locate lost animals, arrange adoptions, prepare lost/found reports, sell dog/cat tags etc.;
    • Ensure that all animals are properly tagged for identification; tags animals as required;
    • Receive, process and balance payments for impound fees, dog tags, animal adoptions, and issues receipts;
    • Participates in various committee and special events e.g. shelter tours, parade, fall fair etc;
    • Assist Registered Vet Technician in the euthanasia and examination of animals;
    • Assists in logging all animals into Master Logbook, and tags animals as required;
    • Maintain all records in Chameleon Software Shelter System – Kennel records, adoptions, claiming of stray animals, animal license and registrations, receipts;
    • Prepares/packages pet information to the public;
    • Exercises and socializes dogs and cats to determine adoptability;
    • Loads/unloads animal cadavers;
    • Provide clerical/front-desk back up, liaise with Call Centre, and dispatch when necessary;
    • Perform other duties as required.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • High School graduation plus an additional program of up to one year in Animal Care; or equivalent;
    • Minimum one-year experience in an animal handling related field (shelter, pet store, groomer, vet clinic);
    • Certificate in Animal Care or equivalent;
    • Computer proficiency in MS Office Suite;
    • Knowledge of Chameleon software application, an asset;
    • Excellent customer service skills;
    • Ability to work independently and in a team environment;
    • Enjoy working with dogs, cats, reptiles, birds and other domestic animals;
    • Current Standard First Aid / CPR C / AED from one of the following: Lifesaving Society, Red Cross, St. Johns, Canadian Ski Patrol;
    • Successful candidates will be required to submit to a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check, at their own expense, prior to commencing employment;
    • Successful candidates will be required to be prophylactically vaccinated against rabies;

 

**Preference will be given to students that have a permanent residency in Brampton.
