    COORDINATOR, MEDIA AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

    (12-MONTH CONTRACT)

     

    AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:

    The City of Brampton strives to communicate with and engage as many Bramptonians as possible, recognizing that the City is among the most diverse communities in Canada.

     

    Reporting to the Director, Strategic Communications, this position is responsible for providing advice and recommendations to ensure corporate communications are relevant within the multi-cultural context of the City of Brampton.  This specialist ensures consistent high quality and effective communications to enhance the City’s positive image and build positive relations with media, the public and internal clients.

    1. Act as an internal consultant to ensure communication and outreach strategies are relevant within the diverse context of Brampton. Identify and recommend effective content, timing, style and distribution channels to ensure messages are well received by diverse groups within the Brampton community.
    2. Assist in the development and evaluation of engagement tools and strategies to ensure feedback is representative of Brampton’s population.
    3. With support from the Strategic Communications team, act as the primary liaison between the City of Brampton and ethnic media outlets, including the equitable coordination of advertising, preparing/ translating releases, and responding to inquiries.
    • Liaise with Communications Advisory Services staff to determine appropriate responses and seek appropriate approval.  Maintain a log of media inquires and responses.  Foster and maintain relationships with various specialty media outlets as well as internal stakeholders.  Provide advice to staff that interact with media.  Attend public meetings and other official events as required to interface with media.
    • Develop and implement media elements of communications plans.  As a speciality media subject matter expert, identify and recommend effective content, timing, style and distribution channels.  Identify and encourage opportunities for positive media coverage in ethnic media outlets.
    • Coordinate Departmental and Corporate advertisements for inclusion in various media outlets to communicate services, policies and programs. Maintain an equitable distribution of advertisements among speciality media outlets and ensure invoices are processed by the appropriate Department.
    • Monitor and report on speciality media issues to ensure appropriate persons
      are kept informed.  Interface with staff, external stakeholders and media outlets in the interest of issues management and resolution.  Provides specialized support to cross-corporate committees as required.

             4. As a key member of the media team, participate in monitoring media coverage, including maintenance of media logs and preparation of the daily news clipping service.

                 Perform quality assurance for outgoing corporate communications materials in languages other than English.  Apply strong Punjabi language skills to verify accuracy of translated materials. 

                 Participate in procurement of effective translation services and develop strong working relationships with successful firm(s).

     

    SELECTION CRITERIA:

    • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Communications, Journalism or Public Relations.
    • 3-5 years of organizational communications experience dealing with speciality media on complex issues, preferably in the public sector.
    • Demonstrated experience in providing communications support to senior management and elected officials.
    • Understanding of municipal government environment and current issues.
    • Understanding of the use of technology and its impact on communication.
    • Solid English and Punjabi language usage skill (both oral and written- Gurmukhi Script). Knowledge of other commonly spoken languages in Brampton such as Urdu, Portuguese, Gujarati and Hindi would be considered an asset
    • Member of International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or a similar related professional organization an asset.
    • Has subject matter expertise in the design and delivery of effective communications products and messages. Understands creative design and print, audio and web production.
    • Uses MS Office, email, internet, Adobe and other PC tools.
