LEGAL COUNSEL, LAND DEVELOPMENT

REAL PROPERTY, COMMERCIAL & DEVELOPMENT LAW SECTION

AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Reporting to the Deputy City Solicitor, Real Property, Commercial and Development Law this position:

 

  • Provides legal counsel support to City departments primarily in the practice area of Land Development Law as part of the Real Estate, Commercial and Development Law team, in the Legal Services division;
  • Demonstrates an understanding of municipal law and practice, ability to draft, review and advise on land development documents including subdivision agreements, site plan agreements, agreements and documents with respect to condominiums, and related Planning Act matters;
  • Demonstrates a willingness to formulate policy and advise on policy initiatives in the areas of Land Development Law, Real Estate Law and related areas including Environmental Law;
  • Attends at Council and Council Committee meetings as required;
  • Delivers legal services, opinions and advice to the Corporation;
  • Undertakes special projects and initiatives in furtherance of the Corporation’s legal direction and strategic objectives; and
  • Is cognizant of legislative and factual frameworks so that municipal obligations are achieved and appropriate solutions can be executed.

 

 

SELECTION CRITERIA:

 

  • Law degree and call to Ontario Bar, with demonstrated interest in Land Development Law and Real Estate Law;
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada;
  • Minimum five (5) years related work experience, preferably in the municipal field;
  • Experience in Environmental Law is an asset;
  • Exceptional communication skills and superior report writing;
  • Ability to prepare solid argument and successfully negotiate resolutions; and
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office suite software.

 

 

**Various tests and/or exams may be administered as part of the selection criteria.
